On Sunday evening July 7, 1935 the
skies north of the Southern Tier opened up, dumping more than 11
inches of rain in some areas and inundating the rivers, lakes and
streams through out
the valley. The terrible chain of events that followed would devastate small
towns and cities alike, destroying hundreds of homes and property and claiming
more than 50 lives. It would become the worst natural disaster in the history
of the Southern Tier.

"Helmira" 1864-1865 : The
Andersonville of the North -
Produced by Bill Jaker. The program focuses on the controversial
Elmira, New York Civil War Prison Camp, where over 3,000 Confederate
prisoners died of disease
and starvation from 1864-1865. "HELMIRA" (a nickname bestowed by prisoners)
looks back at the personal and political attitudes that led to much of the controversy
over the camp, as well as how the city of Elmira dealt with this chapter in its
history. Much of the story is told in pictures and accounts preserved from the
1860s, as well as comments from local historians and descendants of those who
played a role in the life of the prison camp and the community.
