This week Expressions showcases the talents of
three extraordinary young violinists (pictured, right), Meredith
Riley, Emerson Millar, and Eliot Heaton. They won the 2007 Youth
Concerto Competition for the Cayuga
Chamber Orchestra. We'll
visit with them, and get a preview of their March 29 performance
with the orchestra. See bios of the three
below. We also return to the Songwriter Showcase at Binghamton's
Cyber Café West. We'll hear the song stylings of Chris
Merkley and Brittany Garrison. That's this week on Expressions,
Thursday, March 6 on WSKG TV and WSKG HD. This
program will be rebroadcast early Sunday morning 3/22 at 1:30am
on WSKG

Emerson Millar
Twelve year old Emerson Millar
began her violin studies six years ago with Kirsten Marshall at
Ithaca
Talent
Education.
She now studies
with Mr. Zvi Zeitlin at the Eastman School of Music, and has monthly
coaching with Mr. David
Updegraff at the Cleveland Institute of
Music. She has also studied with Brian Lewis, Won Bin-Yim and Linda
Case. In addition to the violin, Emerson plays the piano and enjoys
composing and is a member of the Quartet Con Brio. Emerson was
a finalist in the 2008 Syracuse Symphony Orchestra's concerto

On March 29th Emerson will be a soloist with the Cayuga Chamber
Orchestra performing the 3rd movement of the Mendelssohn
Violin Concerto. Emerson is homeschooled and enjoys spending time with her family,
reading, drawing and cooking.
Meredith Riley
Meredith Riley, a 17 year old senior at Lehman Alternative Community School,
studies violin with Linda Case and Margaret Pressley. Her performance awards
include the Dorothy Richard Starling Scholarship for violin study at the Seattle
Conservatory of Music, first place in the WA state ASTA competition, first
place in the Cayuga Chamber and Syracuse Symphony Orchestra Youth Concerto
competitions, third place in the Central New York MTNA competition, and Junior
semi-finalist in the 2007 and 2008 National Sphinx Competitions for African
American and Latino String Players. During the summer of 2007, Meredith attended
the Heifetz International Music Institute.in Wolfeboro, NH where she was featured
on New Hampshire Public Radio. Also a singer, Meredith soloed for two seasons
with Boston Camerata, performing at the Cloisters of the NY Metropolitan Museum
of Art and throughout the Boston area.
Eliot Heaton
Eliot Reinhardt Heaton, a senior at Geneva High School, began violin lessons
at age three with Ithaca Suzuki program's

Jan Butler. Now studying with Linda
Case in Ithaca, Eliot has accompanied his violin on many adventures over
the past 15 years. As co-concertmaster of the Rochester Philharmonic Youth
Orchestra,
Eliot recently played in cathedrals and concert halls in Budapest and Krakow.
This past spring Eliot soloed with the RPYO in Rochester, where he also gave
a recital as winner of the David Hochstein Competition. Eliot received the
Albright award from the RPO League's Young Artist Audition and was a co-winner
of the Penfield Symphony Jo Amish competition. He has also appeared with
the Finger Lakes Symphony Orchestra. Eliot spends his summers at Greenwood
Chamber
Music Camp. Eliot plays
trumpet and trombone in the Geneva High band and jazz band and is on the
tennis, soccer and swim teams.
