website: The War

August 7, 2007

From the Desk of Brian Sickora...

Next month WSKG presents the new Ken Burns film, THE WAR. This epic 14-hour film about World War II focuses on the stories of citizens from four American towns-Waterbury Connecticut; Mobile, Alabama; Sacramento, California; and the tiny farming town of Luverne, Minnesota.

WSKG will broadcast a preview of THE WAR this month on Monday, August 13 at 12:30 a.m., Sunday August 26 at 10:30 p.m., and Wednesday, August 29 at 10:30 p.m. This introduction includes excerpts, insights from participants, and behind-the-scenes glimpses.

At WSKG we're committed to engagement in the civic life of the communities we serve. History and the lives of people are especially important components of community life. So I'm especially proud that WSKG received a grant from The National Center of Outreach to provide and produce local educational resources and content related to World War II. Materials, including lesson plans, are available to educators through our website's education page.

As part of WSKG's outreach, local high school students conducted interviews with local veterans and other affected by WWII. We were also able to feature local high school students as special musical guests, among them, the Jive Bombers (left). See an excerpt of their performance here. Additionally, WSKG's Director of Television Production and Programming, Brian Frey, has conducted interviews locally with local veterans that will be aired around THE WAR broadcast.

Like many public broadcasting stations, WSKG is collaborating in the StorySHARE War Story Collection Module. StoryShare enables us to collect stories about WWII through our web site as well as to display stories collected locally and provide the ability to search all stories published to public broadcasting stations around the country. I invite you to explore this site and submit your story--whether you're a veteran or someone who was otherwise affected by WWII.

And I invite you to view THE WAR. We will broadcast it in seven episodes September 23rd through the 26th and September 30 through October 2 beginning at 8:00 p.m.

Sincerely,

Brian Sickora
